FROM THE BIG LIE TO SUPPRESSING YOUR VOTE
After Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won in November, Trump refused to accept the results and instead created “The Big Lie” that the election was being stolen from him. Republicans supported him. On January 6th, Trump incited a violent insurrection aimed at stopping the confirmation of Biden’s win by Congress. Congressional Republicans largely refused to certify the vote. Following the 6th, Trump was impeached for his attempted coup. Again, Congressional Republicans refused to hold him accountable.
PROTECT OUR FREEDOM TO VOTE
We can’t win the 2022 election in the next three months. But we could lose it – and all elections going forward – if we don’t push our Members of Congress to act NOW.
There are now over 350 laws being proposed or passed in 43 states, all by Republicans and all focused on one thing: making it possible for them to do what they failed to do last year – overturn the legitimate results of our election.
IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN WATER BOTTLES
Think your calls don’t have an effect? Think again – because our Senator, Dianne Feinstein, finally changed her position on keeping the filibuster and now says it can’t be used (as it has and will be) to block all meaningful progress. This is an enormously important change – and our calls and meetings with her staff helped make it happen. Congratulations! Let’s keep up the pressure to get the job done!
Georgia has passed a 95-page law aimed directly at eliminating the voting rights and safeguards that made it possible …
PASS THE ‘FOR THE PEOPLE’ ACT
The 2022 election can’t be won in the next six months. But it could be lost. Republican’s have introduced over 250 bills in 43 states to suppress voting. New Senator Rev. Warnock calls this “a massive and unabashed assault on voting rights unlike anything we’ve ever seen since the Jim Crow era.”
SAVING DEMOCRACY
Biden in the White House. COVID relief passed, vaccinations rising. You could be forgiven for thinking that now is the time for some hard-earned rest. But the 2022 election may be decided in the next six months, and not in the way we want.
Republicans are using their Big Lie to push more than 250 laws nationwide to stop people from voting.
We’ve been here before
Watching the trial. Hearing about the sexual exploits of an elected leader. Mourning the passing of more lost to gun violence.
There is no way to stop this madness — no way at all, unless we change the rules and accept that, right now, there is no room for compromise with Republican leadership.
And only so much room to compromise with those unwilling to solve problems, no matter which state elected them.
In 2018 ...
progressive activists helped elect — more Democrats to Congress, and took over the House. This single success helped stop many of the most egregious actions of the former guy, and helped propel our successes in November 2020. But we lost some of those seats in 2020, and we now the efforts at vote suppression are intended to reduce progressive votes.
Talk about sore losers.
We worked so hard to encourage people to vote in 2020, registering new voters, reaching out to infrequent voters, and in all ways we could, giving them a reason to vote. Record numbers of voters turned out in some areas, Democrats and Republicans both.
Now, 43 state legislatures with Republican majorities want to make certain that those new and infrequent and - oddly enough - black and brown voters don’t get to vote, record numbers or not.
It took longer than four years to turn the US into the mess it’s in. And it’s going to take a long time to fix the problems the Republican legislature and the former president’s administration have left us in.
But to listen to the media - conservative, liberal, and anywhere in the middle - Joe Biden’s failure to fix everything in the first 60 days or so of his administration is newsworthy.
