And we put all those opportunities on our calendar. Easy to use, and easy to find some ways to resist.
Meet Gloria
Gloria has been called the Postcard Queen. Every week she gathers dozens of volunteers together for pizza and postcards. Here’s her story:
I was so upset when Hillary lost the election - I was literally sick to my stomach for days, and the only thing I could think to do was get involved to fight him.
I tried OFA, and went to several of their meetings, but phone banking scared me. I didn’t like talking with strangers, and didn’t want to make those cold calls. I heard about Indivisible on the Rachel Maddow show, and reached out to Indivisible Sonoma County that same night. I was invited to a meeting at someone’s house - and was hooked from there.
I found myself taking on a leadership role, went to all the meetings and did what I could, but the stress of both leadership and constantly thinking about Trump got to me. After six months, I ended up with a heart event, and needed to take a health break. I let go of all leadership roles.
But when we started sending postcards, that was something I could do. My focus is on turning red districts blue.
Every Tuesday we meet to write postcards. It started small in my home - 6 people, then 8, then 12 - all of us writing postcards.. We now often have many more - dozens of people come to the Round Table every week!
People donate for pizza and postage. Anything that isn’t covered is a donation from me to the movement. And this is important! Every person who decides to vote is a win for us.
I believe that sending these postcards really makes a difference. We write to rural areas that just don’t work for traditional canvassing, but everyone gets the mail. In less than three months we’ve written more than 7,000 postcards. We’ve written 2,500 in Spanish to CA 50 alone. And we have fun doing it! We write in colors, we draw pretty pictures, we make them personal and unique. I’ve seen others post on Facebook the postcards they received, and knew we sent those! It’s a big thing.
And it’s one really important way to get people to know how important their vote is.
