It’s Time to Begin Impeachment

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to push for the beginning of impeachment proceedings. It’s past time.

Speaker Pelosi was clearly wrong to appear to take impeachment off the table. We cannot and must not give Trump a free pass for whatever he wishes to do. Because what he wishes and is now doing is turning our democracy into an authoritarian state. Yes, we must work to win the elections for both Houses and the presidency in 2020. But if we wait until then, it may well be too late.

Look no further than this last week, when it was reported that Trump asked the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, Kevin McAleenan, to block asylum seekers from entering the country (which they are legally entitled to do) and then promised to pardon him if he got into trouble. The chief executive ordered a federal employee to break the law and promised a pardon if he did. It doesn’t really get more clearly impeachable than that. Now, please: do your job. Begin proceedings.

Play Hardball: We Need the Full Report

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to do everything in their power to force the Attorney General to furnish the complete, unredacted Mueller report to Congress and to furnish a minimally redacted version to the public, forthwith.

William Barr is carrying out the job Trump always wanted Jeff Sessions to do: he’s corruptly serving Trump, covering up his crimes and attacking his enemies. He, the chief law enforcement officer of the United States, is an active threat to democracy and to the rule of law. The time for caution is now clearly past: Barr must be confronted immediately with every power Congress can muster: subpoenas, impeachment (of Barr himself), withholding funds. The risk is not that Congress will go too far. Not at all. The risk is that Congress will do too little in the face of this dictatorial seizure of our country. Fight as if our lives depended on it. Because they do.

Fight Trump on Immigration

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to oppose Trump at every turn as he uses the issue of immigration to advance his white nationalist state.

From his seizing emergency powers to his abuse of migrant children. From ordering officials to break the law and close the border – and offering to pardon them – to threatening to send asylum seekers to sanctuary cities. Trump is using immigration to dismantle our democracy. Please oppose him at every turn and make the case that immigration – properly controlled and fairly administered – is critical to the economic and moral health of our country. Raise your voice and, just as importantly, raise your fists. Congress has power. USE IT.

We Stand with Ilhan Omar – You Must, Too

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to demonstrate the courage and moral clarity that Speaker Nancy Pelosi this week so sorely lacked and to stand with and defend Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Rep. Omar’s remarks about the aftermath of 9/11, in which Muslim Americans were widely vilified, were unremarkable when she delivered them last month. It was only when one line – “some people did something” – was taken out of context by the Republican far right that it was made into an issue. The Republicans do this relentlessly. Speaker Pelosi should know: they demonize her all the time. When this happens, all Dems must stand together and protect their own. They must fight back, not cower in the face of bad faith smears. I’m ashamed of Speaker Pelosi right now. Don’t make me ashamed of you.

Don’t Abandon Puerto Rico

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Senator to push hard for swift passage of the disaster relief bill that includes ample funds for Puerto Rico in addition to the funds for other natural disasters in California, Texas, Florida and the Midwest.

Puerto Rico, a non-voting territory populated by brown, Spanish-speaking Americans, is a natural target for the White Nationalist Republican Party of Trump. Accordingly, they want to deny Puerto Ricans the money they desperately need to recover. Don’t let them, at any cost. Stand up for America and include Puerto Rico’s funds. And do it now.

[Feinstein]: Co-Sponsor the Green New Deal!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask Senator Feinstein to drop her effort to craft an alternative to the Green New Deal and embrace the Green New Deal itself by co-sponsoring S.Res.59.

As David Roberts has written: “[Democrats] could stick together and show Republicans, and the public, that there is a new, stronger consensus behind reducing emissions. Or they could demonstrate that the party remains divided, weak, and hesitant — and that the GOP has plenty of room to continue cynically slow-walking the issue.”

The Senator’s refusal to support the broad outlines that the Green New Deal offers chooses the latter alternative and is misguided. In chasing an illusive, weak compromise, it squanders the activist energy and bold initiative necessary to solve this most critical problem. The Senator has written that she’d prefer to focus exclusively on climate change, but that is also misguided: addressing climate change will require massive and rapid changes to our infrastructure and society.

We cannot build the political will for this kind of rapid and comprehensive change without also addressing the jobs that will be needed and those that will be lost, the healthcare that is often tied to those jobs, and the implications for communities most effected by the effects of climate change. The Green New Deal recognized that climate change is a systemic problem. We must address the whole system to mitigate it.

I urge the Senator to drop her hesitation and to support the Green New Deal.

No More Mr Nice Guy: The Tax Returns, Now, Or Else

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask Rep. Thompson to push the Ways and Means Committee to take a hard line with Steve Mnuchin and the IRS. The law is crystal clear: the IRS “shall furnish” any individual’s tax returns to Congress. There is no wiggle room and there must not be any further delays.

It is now evident that the administration will refuse to obey the law in order to protect itself. Congress MUST use all the powers at its disposal, including the arrest and incarceration of those stalling or refusing to obey Congress’s orders, no matter how high their office. To do otherwise will be capitulation to a corrupt and autocratic president* when our democracy hangs by a thread. You have powers. USE THEM.

Eliminate Plastic Pollution and Waste

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Senator] to support Senate Bill 54, to illuminate plastic pollution and waste.

Single-use products—typically plastic packaging – are overflowing our landfills, fouling our oceans and streets, and burdening the environment. Current disposal and recycling policies cannot resolve these problems, and California can no longer afford to wait for a resolution.

Senate Bill 54 requires reduction, composting or recycling of 75 percent of single-use packaging by 2030. It’s a goal we can and must achieve in California. I’m asking the Senator to vote “YES” on SB 54.
