Phone Scripts 4.22-4.28.2019

This week, there is only one script, because there is one task above all:
To put pressure on our representatives to have the House begin an impeachment inquiry.

To be clear: impeachment proceeds in steps, the first of which is hearings to determine whether impeachable offenses have occurred. Only after these are concluded does the House vote on whether or not to impeach the president. If they decide to impeach, the case goes to the Senate, where it is essentially presented as a trial. If the Senate by a two-thirds majority votes to convict, the president is removed from office.

Under the current system, the options for checking a president who abuses his power to the degree that Trump has are functionally impeachment proceedings or nothing. Other hearings won’t suffice, in part because they aren’t held in order to determine if the president has committed offenses that should lead to his removal. Mueller’s report makes it clear that Trump has committed grievous offenses. If Trump cannot be investigated through impeachment, no president can or ever will be. Congress must step up but they’re fearful and hesitant. We must push them.

Please, use this script or your own words, but call every day this week. The volume of calls needs to be deafening.

Begin Impeachment Hearings!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to insist that the House of Representatives begin impeachment hearings.

We waited patiently for the Mueller report and the results are damning: a candidate and campaign who knowingly welcomed the help of a hostile foreign power to tip the election. A president who obstructed justice in a variety of ways to hide that fact. Congress must not look the other way in the face of this evidence.

They must not pretend that gathering facts through other hearings will be enough to hold the president accountable. Instead, Congress must follow the Constitution and begin impeachment hearings, which are the means given by the founders to determine whether impeachable offenses have been committed. Only at the end of those hearings will the House decide whether the evidence merits impeachment.

But it must begin the impeachment hearings NOW.
