Phone Scripts 8.19-8.25.2019

It’s August recess and our representatives are back home in their districts. While the House appears to be headed in the right direction on impeachment and other critical issues, they are moving too slowly. Trump’s abuses aren’t taking a recess. Children are still being torn from their parents and kept in concentration camps where they are treated abusively. Trump, even in the wake of the shootings in El Paso, continues to incite white nationalist violence. The economy teeters on the edge of a recession and Trump’s ‘team’ is completely unprepared to manage the downturn. And Trump continues to degrade the international order while kissing up to dictators, putting the entire globe at risk.

Our representatives need to hear from us now. We encourage you to find the time to attend a town hall meeting and let your representative know that the time to act is NOW. Impeachment hearings need to be rapid. All forms of resisting Trump through oversight need to be put into overdrive. Lives and the survival of our country are at stake.

Find scheduled town halls at impeachmentaugust.org. Please take a few minutes each day and call, using our scripts below. Hate the phone? Resistbot (resist.bot) is your friend.

Ban Assault Weapons

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to support legislation that bans the possession and use of assault-style rifles.

Assault rifles are weapons of war, designed for the rapid killing of humans. They have no place in a safe and free society, yet they are the weapon of choice for mass murder occurring every week in our country. It’s time for this to stop for good. Please pass an assault rifle ban with no expiration date. Ban them once and for all.

Republican-fueled Terrorism Is a National Crisis

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to continue to name and fight the scourge of Republican-fueled white nationalist terrorism that is plaguing our country.

Mass shootings by white supremacy terrorists, incited by Donald Trump, are now a danger to every American – and they are dramatically on the rise. Please name this crisis for what it is: Trump’s racist exhortations combined with a refusal by Republicans to allow any votes on sensible gun control. Republicans won’t change, but we must daily frame this terrorist crisis for what it is and emphatically remind everyone of just who is behind it.

Defund Hate

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to cut the funding for ICE and CBP to below 2016 levels. I’m also asking that no additional unrestricted funds be given to either ICE or CBP. Under Trump, both ICE and CBP have become the dehumanized instruments of a white supremacist state. The only way to stem their abuses is to cut their funding. I’m counting on my [Representative/Senator] to do just that.

This Recess, Visit the Camps

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to set aside time this recess to visit the Trump concentration camps and to publicize what they see.

We know what happens when we look away: the abuses get worse, families are torn apart, and children, women, and men are traumatized and die. Congress has the unique ability to shine a bright light on these abuses, which is one of the only weapons we have at the moment for slowing them down. Please, skip a fundraiser this recess. Visit a camp.

Use the Congressional Review Act to block Gutting of Endangered Species Act

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to immediately invoke the Congressional Review Act to block implementation of the new rule weakening the Endangered Species Act.

Gutting the Endangered Species Act on behalf of fossil fuel producers when the climate crisis is causing species collapse world wide is insane. Congress has sixty days to block this Trump action using the Congressional Review Act. Please invoke it immediately!

Secure Our Voting Machines

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Senator to continue to push for passage of the SAFE Act, which would preclude jurisdictions from using hackable machine-marked printouts with barcodes from the vendors’ insecure ballot marking devices. We know that our next election is already under attack. And we know that Russia has infiltrated our voting systems. We must secure this weak link.

Impeachment Hearings Can’t Wait!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask Representative Thompson to support the beginning of impeachment hearings.

The Judiciary Committee has already begun the process of impeachment hearings, albeit too slowly. One hundred and twenty-six House Democrats have come out in support of impeachment proceedings. I’m asking Representative Thompson to represent his constituents’ wishes and join their ranks.

Thank You for Supporting Impeachment Hearings!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to thank Representative Huffman for supporting the beginning of impeachment hearings NOW. The Constitution is clear: impeachment isn’t optional. When the facts point towards impeachable conduct, it’s Congress’s duty to act. We know from the Mueller report and from Democratic leaders’ statements that there are many examples of impeachable offenses. Thank you for doing the right thing! Please press your colleagues to do the same!

Hold a Climate Debate!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to say that I’m appalled that the DNC is not only NOT HOLDING a climate debate, it’s threatening 2020 presidential candidates who even PARTICIPATE IN ONE with banning them from other debates. This is outrageous!

Climate change is not just a “single issue” but something that impacts all other issues. Americans understand that. It's why climate is a top issue in this election – it must be debated!

Frankly, the DNC’s threatening presidential candidates over even engaging with the most critical issue of our time makes me angry and mistrustful of the DNC. Unless you reverse your position and welcome a climate debate, I will withhold all donations from you and donate only to individual candidates, ones who aren’t in thrall to the fossil fuel industry – as you appear to be. As an activist, I can say that you are undermining what the Democratic Party should be standing for. Shame on you!

Tax Oil & Gas Extraction (YES on SB 246)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Governor to support SB 246, to levy an oil tax that can help wean California off of fossil fuels.

California, which last year extracted 165 million barrels of oil has, unlike a majority of other states, never taxed oil production. This has to end, now. Fossil fuels are driving a climate catastrophe that is threatening human life on earth. Please help wean the state off of fossil fuels by supporting SB 246.

Eliminate Plastic Pollution and Waste

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Senator] to support Senate Bill 54, to eliminate plastic pollution and waste.

Single-use products—typically plastic packaging –  are overflowing our landfills, fouling our oceans and streets, and burdening the environment. Current disposal and recycling policies cannot resolve these problems, and California can no longer afford to wait for a resolution.

Senate Bill 54 requires reduction, composting or recycling of 75 percent of single-use packaging by 2030. It’s a goal we can and must achieve in California. I’m asking the Senator to vote “YES” on SB 54.

Restore Voting Rights to Parolees (YES on ACA 6)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Assemblymember] to support ACA 6 (McCarty), which will help restore the right to vote to people on parole.

It’s time for California to join the growing national movement to strengthen our democracy by ensuring that everyone – including people on parole who are reentering society – can have their voices counted. Please vote YES on ACA 6 (McCarty).
