Phone Scripts 9.2-9.8.2019

Yes, it’s critical that we win – White House, Senate, and House – in 2020. But it’s also vital to protect our country and our world in the meantime. We have to do both. Trump is now openly committing impeachable offenses almost daily. Yet the House pretends that it needs “more evidence”. The Amazon is burning and in danger of its entire ecosystem collapsing. ICE and CBP are still tearing families apart and keeping people in concentration camps under hideous conditions.

There is work for our representatives to do now and it doesn’t involve passing legislation that won’t even get a vote in the Senate. It involves oversight and restricting funding to stop or slow the damage where we can.

This week please join us by making calls to our Senators and Representative, using our scripts below. Hate the phone? Resistbot (resist.bot) is your friend.

Reject ICE’s Money Grab

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling today because I’m very concerned about ICE’s plan to pull millions of dollars from other agencies to fund its detention and deportation activities.

I’m asking [the MoC] to:

Publicly denounce DHS’s transfer and reprogramming notification.

Release the full text of the transfer and reprogramming notification, so that we know exactly where the money being transferred to ICE is coming from.

Pass a fiscal year 2020 spending bill that finally put an end to DHS’s ability to manipulate the appropriations process to expand the immigration detention and deportation systems.

Has [the MoC] taken a stand on this issue?

Defund Hate

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to cut the funding for ICE and CBP to below 2016 levels. I’m also asking that no additional unrestricted funds be given to either ICE or CBP. Under Trump, both ICE and CBP have become the dehumanized instruments of a white supremacist state. The only way to stem their abuses is to cut their funding. I’m counting on my [MoC] to do just that.

It’s Time for Impeachment Hearings!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to announce their support for beginning impeachment hearings.

There can be no possible justification for maintaining that “we need more information” before deciding to investigate the president through the process of impeachment hearings and for doing it at an accelerated rate. Trump isn’t demonstrating his unfitness for office daily; he’s doing it by the hour. To pretend otherwise is farcical and a complete abdication of responsibility.

I need to see [my MoC’s] public support for impeachment proceedings, now.

Ban Assault Weapons

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to support legislation that bans the possession and use of assault-style rifles.

Assault rifles are weapons of war, designed for the rapid killing of humans. They have no place in a safe and free society, yet they are the weapon of choice for mass murder occurring every week in our country. It’s time for this to stop for good. Please pass an assault rifle ban with no expiration date. Ban them once and for all.

Visit the Camps

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to visit the Trump concentration camps this week and to publicize what they see.

We know what happens when we look away: the abuses get worse, families are torn apart, and children, women, and men are traumatized and die. Congress has the unique ability to shine a bright light on these abuses, which is one of the only weapons we have at the moment for slowing them down. The camps have been turning away Congressional investigators. This MUST be challenged. Please, conduct a visit this week!

Use the Congressional Review Act to block Gutting of Endangered Species Act

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to immediately invoke the Congressional Review Act to block implementation of the new rule weakening the Endangered Species Act.

Gutting the Endangered Species Act on behalf of fossil fuel producers when the climate crisis is causing species collapse world wide is insane. Congress has sixty days to block this Trump action using the Congressional Review Act. Please invoke it immediately!

Use the Congressional Review Act to block implementation of the new DHS “Public Charge” immigration rule

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to immediately invoke the Congressional Review Act to block implementation of the new DHS “Public Charge” immigration rule.

There are two clear purposes for “public charge” rule change. The first is to continue generating fear, cruelty, and chaos, among, towards, and for, immigrants and potential immigrants, particularly nonwhites. The second is to fundamentally shift American immigration policy from “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” to one that welcomes only the white, the wealthy, and those expected to become reliable Republicans voters.

Please use the CRA to block it!

Secure Our Voting Machines

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Senator to continue to push for passage of the SAFE Act, which would preclude jurisdictions from using hackable machine-marked printouts with barcodes from the vendors’ insecure ballot marking devices. We know that our next election is already under attack. And we know that Russia has infiltrated our voting systems. We must secure this weak link.

Tax Oil & Gas Extraction (YES on SB 246)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Governor to support SB 246, to levy an oil tax that can help wean California off of fossil fuels.

California, which last year extracted 165 million barrels of oil has, unlike a majority of other states, never taxed oil production. This has to end, now. Fossil fuels are driving a climate catastrophe that is threatening human life on earth. Please help wean the state off of fossil fuels by supporting SB 246.

Eliminate Plastic Pollution and Waste

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Senator] to support Senate Bill 54, to eliminate plastic pollution and waste.

Single-use products—typically plastic packaging –  are overflowing our landfills, fouling our oceans and streets, and burdening the environment. Current disposal and recycling policies cannot resolve these problems, and California can no longer afford to wait for a resolution.

Senate Bill 54 requires reduction, composting or recycling of 75 percent of single-use packaging by 2030. It’s a goal we can and must achieve in California. I’m asking the Senator to vote “YES” on SB 54.

Restore Voting Rights to Parolees (YES on ACA 6)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Assemblymember] to support ACA 6 (McCarty), which will help restore the right to vote to people on parole.

It’s time for California to join the growing national movement to strengthen our democracy by ensuring that everyone – including people on parole who are reentering society – can have their voices counted. Please vote YES on ACA 6 (McCarty).
