This week Katie Porter, a freshman Congresswoman from Orange County whom many of us worked to elect in 2018, came out in favor of beginning impeachment hearings. Jared Huffman has supported opening hearings since 2017, when the first impeachable offenses became obvious. Yet Mike Thompson still refuses to call for impeachment hearings to begin. He needs to hear from us every day until he finally steps up accepts his responsibility as a member of Congress to uphold our laws.
This week, too, came more shocking reports of abuses from the child refugee concentration camps the Trump regime is running. Yet Congress has held almost no hearings about this disgrace and the House is considering giving ICE and CBP even more money, in an effort to look tough on immigration. CBP and ICE are out of control and must not be given one penny more to continue their abuses.
Because of Democratic leadership’s decision to not go forward with impeachment hearings now, they are derelict in their duty to the American people and are actively undermining the rule of law through their neglect.
By playing politics and trying to run out the clock until they can be saved by the 2020 election, they’re endangering our nation. Fortunately for some Indivisible Sonoma County members, Rep. Jared Huffman understands this and has supported opening impeachment hearings since 2017. But others continue to offer weak arguments in defense of inaction. This is not what we fought so hard for.
Call our MoCs. They need to hear our voices – every day!
In a meeting this week with Representative Jared Huffman, we discussed the need to begin impeachment hearings, which he has supported for over a year because of the many impeachable offenses Trump had already committed in plain view. Jared had a recommendation: tell our other Members of Congress and the Speaker of the House that they should be more concerned about the dangers of not beginning impeachment hearings.
If you’re a Huffman constituent, please take time this week to thank him for his smart and principled stance. And if you’re a Thompson constituent, please call multiple times and let him know it’s time to begin impeachment hearings – or we risk ceding legitimacy to Trump’s claims of exoneration by giving him a pass.
We’re in a race against time. In the words of Sarah Kendzior, an expert on authoritarian systems, “Once an autocrat gets in, it is very hard to get them out. Every day is damage done. Opponents of autocracy need to use every tool they have. Officials need be fast and forceful before time runs out.” She concludes: “If they don't have impeachment hearings, they will end up with show trials.”
She’s right. Our elected officials need to be faster and more forceful – and it’s up to us to get them there. Please make calls several times this week in support of them taking rapid action in defense of our democracy. When our Representatives say things like, “The public isn’t there yet”, they’re talking about every time we don’t call. Let’s show them we’re there and we need them to step up.
Trump is hollowing out our government and replacing it with autocracy – a dictatorship. He has decimated departments, refused to uphold the law, enriched himself at the taxpayers’ expense. And now he is taking the next step in the autocrat’s playbook: using the immense powers of the government to go after his political opponents.
Throwing shade or getting him to throw a tantrum does absolutely nothing to slow his grip on power. It’s time for our leaders to accept their responsibility and begin impeachment hearings to make the case against Trump in front of the American people.
The rule of law ceases to exist if no attempt is made to uphold it. We urge all members to call your Congressman several times this week and ask the House to begin impeachment hearings.
Nancy Pelosi is now using the same talking points as Mitt Romney: that the American people “aren’t there yet” for impeachment. This is an abdication of her duty to decide whether Trump has committed impeachable offenses (hint: he has, many times over) and to then hold him accountable using the sole means the Constitution has provided.
Despite a blue wave driven by those who want to counter Trump, she and other House leaders are failing to lead – so it’s up to us to demand that they do. We’re asking all Indivisible members to call several times this week and ask that the House begin impeachment hearings now and that they push aggressively in all other hearings as well, instead of maintaining their current snail’s pace.
If the rule of law isn’t enforced, it will cease to exist – and that can’t wait until the next election.
It’s time to call – every day!! The Resistance to Trump has reached a critical turning point, with Trump stonewalling every attempt to hold him accountable and his Attorney General, William Barr, abusing his office to act as Trump’s personal lawyer.
Congress must begin impeachment hearings, but our Democratic representatives are hesitant, wavering and afraid. This time it’s not Republicans who need to hear from us, but our Representatives who must find their courage and fast. Appeasement of Trump and the Republicans is a road to disaster.
Please call your Members of Congress – daily! – to demand they protect the rule of law by beginning impeachment hearings now.
It’s time to call – every day!! The Resistance to Trump has reached a critical point, with Trump using Attorney General William Barr as his personal lawyer, working to discredit the Mueller report’s cataloging of multiple impeachable offenses of collusion and obstruction and to attack Trump’s political opponents.
Yet our Democratic representatives are hesitant and wavering, afraid to begin impeachment hearings. This time it’s not Republicans who need to hear from us, but our Representatives who must find their courage and fast. Appeasement, of Trump, the Republicans, and their supporters, is a road to disaster. Please call your Members of Congress – daily! – to demand they protect the rule of law by beginning impeachment hearings.
This week we’re renewing our request for everyone to call daily to urge our Representatives to act: the House must begin aggressively using its power to constrain Trump, including beginning the process of impeachment hearings. Trump is rapidly consolidating the dictatorial power he has always sought and there’s no time to waste – certainly not until the next election. Our representatives must fight back hard now.
