Phone Scripts 4/10/2017

Scripts this week focus our Members of Congress (MoCs) on dire issues regarding refugees, war powers, Russian Interference, healthcare and the abysmal Republican budget. Please use your own wording to continue to Make Congress Listen!  Many of these scripts will also be on Amplify, a great new phone app from Indivisible SF that is customized to our region. Here are today’s scripts:

Call Congressman Thompson (District 5) or Congressman Huffman (District 2)

Mike Thompson: DC Office (202) 225-3311; Santa Rosa Phone (707) 542-7182
Jared Huffman: DC Office (202) 225-5161; Petaluma Phone (707) 981-8967
__________

On Russian Interference:

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I thank Congressman [Huffman or Thompson] for co-sponsoring H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would set up a 12-member bipartisan, independent commission empowered to examine attempts by the Russian government to interfere with and undermine trust in last year’s U.S. elections. The bill has been in committee since early January, and I ask that you do everything in your power to move it to a vote. This is critical to our democracy!

__________

On refugees, war powers, and congress:

Script 1

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. In light of the Republican President’s recent decision to bomb a Syrian airbase - causing little significant damage but increasing the potential for more US involvement in the Syrian Civil War - I urge Congressman [Thompson or Huffman] to support demands that the Republican President obey the War Powers resolution and get Congressional approval for all further actions.

Script 2

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. The recent use of Sarin gas by the Syrian government against their own citizens is appalling. Of equal concern is that Syrian refugees are prohibited from seeking safety in the US, by the acts of the Republican President. I urge Congressman [Thompson or Huffman] to support rapid vetting of all refugees, including those from Syria and the other nations that the Republican President has tried to ban.

Background: The use of chemical weapons in Syria is an atrocity that the world cannot ignore, and those responsible must be brought to justice. However, no Commander in Chief should take lightly a decision to deploy the US military overseas—and if the President commits to a long-term military action, he or she is bound by our laws to seek congressional authorization for this act.

__________

On healthcare:

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Thank you for holding fast on your commitment to protect health care for millions of Americans, including women, children, the elderly, and those of limited means. Your steadfast position on the Republican efforts to destroy the Affordable Care Act is exemplary.

[For Congressman Huffman] Thank you also for co-sponsoring HR 676, which will extend Medicare services to all.

[For Congressman Thompson] Please support HR 676, which will extend Medicare services to all.

Background:These services will be fully funded (1) from existing sources of government revenues for health care, (2) by increasing personal income taxes on the top 5% of income earners, (3) by instituting a progressive excise tax on payroll and self-employment income, (4) by instituting a tax on unearned income, and (5) by instituting a tax on stock and bond transactions. Amounts that would have been appropriated for federal public health care programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), are transferred and appropriated to carry out this bill.

__________
Call Senator Feinstein:

SF Office: (415) 393-0707
DC Office: (202) 224-3841
LA Office: (310) 914-7300
San Diego Office: (619) 231-9712
Fresno Office: (559) 485-7430

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Thank you for your vote of NO on the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and your vote to retain the 60-vote requirement for all Supreme Court nominees. I appreciate your willingness to stand with your constituents in opposition to this nomination.

In the coming weeks you will face a series of votes that will potentially strip Americans of many rights under the government. These votes will impact free speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion, among others. I am counting on you to continue to protect our rights. Thank you.

__________
Call Senator Harris:

SF Office: (415) 355-9041
DC Office: (202) 224-3553
Sacramento Office: (916) 448-2787
LA Office: (213) 894-5000
San Diego Office: (619) 239-3884

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I’d like to thank Senator Harris for her vocal support of universal health care, yet I remain very concerned about the Trump administration’s attempt to repeal and replace the ACA and replace it with the unacceptable AHCA. We should not return to the time when a family was an illness away from bankruptcy, and taxpayers had to pay $75 to $125 BILLION to cover the costs of care for the uninsured. Please vote NO on repealing the ACA/Obamacare without plans for a simultaneous replacement of equal or better value to families. I urge Senator Harris to continue to use everything in her power to ensure the ACA remains intact, and I encourage her to shift the conversation towards single-payer. Thank you.

Bonus: Thank the Senator for her recent remarks on the abysmal Republican budget!
