Call Congressman Thompson (District 5) or Congressman Huffman (District 2)

Mike Thompson: DC Office (202) 225-3311; Santa Rosa Phone (707) 542-7182

1. On Military Action in Syria

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I am devastated about the gas attacks in Syria and deeply concerned about how our government should intervene. I'm calling to ask [Representative Thompson or Huffman] to make a public statement urging Trump to get congressional approval for any continued military action in Syria. President Trump should not make decisions about this matter unilaterally. I urge the Representative to speak up for checks and balances. Thanks for taking my call.

Background: The use of chemical weapons in Syria is an atrocity that the world cannot ignore, and those responsible must be brought to justice. However, no Commander in Chief should take lightly a decision to deploy the US military overseas—and if the President commits to a long-term military action, he or she is bound by our laws to seek congressional authorization for this act.

2. On Refugees

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. The recent use of Sarin gas by the Syrian government against their own citizens is appalling. Of equal concern is that Syrian refugees are prohibited from seeking safety in the US, by the acts of the Republican President. I urge Congressman[ Thompson or Huffman] to support rapid vetting of all refugees, including those from Syria and the other nations that the Republican President has tried to ban. Thank you for listening.

3. On Russian Interference

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I thank Congressman [Huffman or Thompson] for co-sponsoring H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would set up a 12-member bipartisan, independent commission empowered to examine attempts by the Russian government to interfere with and undermine trust in last year’s U.S. elections. The bill has been in committee since early January, and I ask that you do everything in your power to move it to a vote. This is critical to our democracy! Thank you.

4. On Climate Change

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.  I am concerned about global warming. I am aware that the only real way to combat global warming is through progressive policies espoused by Democrats, such as investment in renewable energy and public transportation. It is time to put politics aside and do what is right for our children and grandchildren. We can debate the methods of fighting manmade global warming, but we must stop debating its existence. Thank you for listening.

1. On Military Action in Syria

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm calling from [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I'm calling to ask [Senator Feinstein or Harris] to make a public statement urging Trump to get congressional approval for any continued military action in Syria. I do believe that Bashar al-Assad should be held accountable for the atrocious acts of violence he has committed against the Syrians, but I don't think President Trump should make decisions about this matter unilaterally. I urge the Senator to speak up for checks and balances and a government that works together to make important decisions. Thanks for taking my call.

2. On Climate Change

Hi, my name is ______ and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.  I am very concerned about global warming. The only real way to combat global warming is through progressive policies espoused by Democrats, such as investment in renewable energy and public transportation. It is time to put politics aside and do what is right for our children and grandchildren. We can debate the methods of fighting man-made global warming, but we must stop debating its existence. Thank you for listening.

3. On the Budget
Hello, my name is ______ and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. The Republican President’s new budget cuts funding for many institutions and programs that American citizens rely on, all for an amped up defense budget. I expect Senator [Feinstein or Harris] to vote NO on this budget and use every tool possible to avoid irreversible damage to critical federal agencies and federally funded programs.  Thank you.

More on the Budget (Call more than once, use different messages).
3.1 I am calling because I am extremely concerned about President Trump’s proposed cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State Department, the Department of Energy, and the Department of the Interior. These agencies perform a vital service for all Americans by protecting human health, keeping our environment livable, holding polluters accountable, and promoting lifesaving scientific research. Especially now, when global climate change threatens the safety of the entire planet, we cannot afford to cut funding for scientific research or any programs that protect the environment.  I ask that the senator issue a public statement in opposition to these cuts and that they vote against any proposals that eliminate funding for these crucial programs.
3.2 I’m calling because I am extremely concerned about Trump’s proposed cuts to health care programs, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). Cutting funding for lifesaving medical research, taking food from poor women and children, and shutting down health care programs is cruel and shortsighted. I ask that the senator take a strong and public stance in opposition to these cuts and fight to protect the many federal  programs that support human health and scientific research.
3.3 I am calling because I am concerned about cuts to funding for housing in the federal budget. (Inset personal details here: I am a public housing resident, an affordable housing resident, a concerned citizen).  Federal funding of public and affordable housing is a lifeline for millions of people.  The proposed cuts will cause critical public housing for working families to deteriorate and homelessness to rise.  They will further burden low-income families already squeezed by the high cost of housing.  These are not discretionary programs. I ask that the senator issue a public statement opposing these cuts to the housing budget.
