Phone Scripts 5.18.2017

These scripts thank our MOCs for holding firm on the appointment of a Department of Justice special counsel. We want to have faith in the DOJ  process; we also want our legislators to explore the best and most transparent options to inform the public about all possible violations of the law, collusion with foreign powers, abuse of power, or any obstruction of justice.

Department of Justice Special Counsel appointment:

Hi, my name is ______ and I’m calling from [City, Zip].   I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. The Department of Justice just appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to continue the investigation into Russian ties to the current administration and Russian efforts to affect the outcome of the recent presidential election. I am calling to thank the Senator for listening to public concerns and applying pressure to the DOJ. This positive move does not eliminate further action. I trust Senator [Feinstein/Harris] to explore the best and most transparent options to inform the public about all possible violations of the law, collusion with foreign powers, abuse of power, or any obstruction of justice. I ask that she explore either an Independent Commission or a Select Senate Committee. Thank you.

Withhold All Consent

Hi, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Senate procedural tools need to be used to slow the Trump & GOP legislative agenda.  You, [Senator Harris or Feinstein,] have the immense power to disrupt the course of business.  We strongly URGE you to OBJECT to all “unanimous consents” requests until the Senate Intelligence Committee holds hearings with Mr. Comey and others.  We also urge you to filibuster any legislation - there should be no ‘business as usual.’ The power to delay is the power to win.  No more playing nice! Our democracy is at stake.

Senator Feinstein:

Speaking out against Trumpcare

Hi, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I want to thank the Senator for appearing on “Meet the Press” and speaking out against the all male health care working group formed in the Senate, and tweeting that the House Republican health care bill is an attack on California women. I ask her to make sure women have a seat at this table. Thirteen men making the health care decisions for 125 million American women is just not acceptable. Who is going to point the finger at this inequality? She can. She has shown us in the last week that she’s not afraid to speak out. Thank you.

Air safety: Call House and Senate MoCs

Hi, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.  I’m calling because the Department of Homeland Security has approved a rule that could have serious and deadly impacts on air transportation.  By banning laptops from the cabin of aircraft, the DHS has created a  fire hazard for which airlines are unprepared. DHS is now considering expanding this dangerous practice. Lithium Ion batteries, which power laptop and portable devices, are a significant fire risk, and have been known to overheat even while unused.  Air carrier regulations demand that they be handled as dangerous cargo. The FAA has record of 152 airplane incidents that have already occurred due to lithium ion batteries, 4 of them in February of this year. All incidents on aircraft where batteries were located in passenger compartments were solved with minor incident.  A fire in the cargo hold, conversely, ended the lives of two pilots on a UPS cargo flight 2010. Representative / Senator I ask that you use every contact within your scope of influence to end this dangerous practice before lives are lost due to alack of foresight.  What can you do to ensure that passenger cargo holds remain a place where dangerous cargo is not allowed? Thank you!

Ethics Legislation

Hello, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.  Under the current administration, several nominees for high-level appointments have decided to remove their names from consideration because of major ethical concerns and conflicts of interest.  I find it very concerning that these individuals were nominated in the first place, seemingly without appropriate vetting.  I’m calling to thank Congressman Huffman for introducing new legislation that will strengthen ethical standards for political appointees in the executive branch, closing loopholes and elevating into federal law standards that are currently up to the President to determine and enforce. I’m particularly grateful that he has worked to include ethical standards the Republican President embraced during his recent campaign but has failed to observe. Thank you.

Paris Accord

Hello, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Trump's advisors continue to review his threat to quit the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming, and say he will announce his position after the G-7 summit next week. We know that this is a topic dear to Rep. Huffman's heart, as a member of the bipartisan delegation to the UN Conference on Climate Change in 2015. If this administration does pull out of the agreement, how will the Congressman respond? Thank you.

Both Congressman on HR 356:

Hi, my name is _____ and I live in [City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Speaker Ryan must heed your call for an independent investigation. Our institutions are at stake! Thank you for taking action by signing a discharge petition to force a vote on HR 356, the bipartisan bill that would establish an outside, independent commission. Please continue to help us to get there as soon as possible. Now that the Department of Justice has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as Independent Counsel, a parallel independent investigation must be effectively initiated and should be fully funded with subpoena powers up to and including the President. No Other House Business should occur until this investigation is in place.
