Here's today's action alert email that went out to 960+ local Indys!
We are charged up and ready to fight! We are angry about the Administration’s secretive and all-too-cozy relationship with Russia. We are fearful about the future of healthcare. Indications are that the budget and tax plan will only benefit the wealthy. We foresee a long and arduous road ahead to make substantive change in our country, and that is why we say this is a marathon!
As Robert Reich says: “Standing up to bullies is the hallmark of a civilized society.”
Last week we highlighted California’s strategies for the Resistance: Legislate, Litigate, Organize. As a follow up, here is a call to action we support brought to you by the leaders of Silicon Valley Courageous Resistance:
It’s crunch time! SB149, the Presidential Tax Transparency & Accountability Act has passed through three State Senate Committees and will be heard on the Senate floor next week, possibly as early as Tuesday, but definitely this week. Could you and your groups and networks call as many of the senators below as possible and urge them to support this bill on the floor next week? We have 11 Senators confirmed as “yes”, but need as many of the following to vote “yes” as well. Please call and give your own personal message or simply say (you) think it’s important to uphold transparency in government and democratic norms, and (you) would like the senator to support SB149 by voting “yes”. Here are the State Senators to call:
Atkins, Toni (San Diego): (916)-651-4039
Beall, Jim (Santa Clara): (916) 651-4015
Bradford, Steven (Los Angeles): (916) 651-4035
Dodd, Bill (Contra Costa, Napa, Sacramento, Solano, Sonoma, Yolo): (916) 651-4003
Galgiani, Cathleen (Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus): (916) 651-4005
Glazer, Steven (Alameda, Contra Costa): (916) 651-4007
Hernandez, Ed (Los Angeles): (916) 651-4022
Hueso, Ben (Imperial, San Diego): (916) 651-4040

And if you want to further engage on SB 149 this week, here is a template letter written by one of our activist writers. We welcome you to send your version to your favorite daily, weekly or blog. Thanks Caroline Z. for this great letter:
Hooray for State Sen. Mike McGuire!
His bill, the Presidential Tax Transparency & Accountability Act (SB 149), requires that candidates for President must submit the past five years of their tax returns to the California Secretary of State, who would make the information available to the public on their website. Presidential candidates who do not do so are ineligible to be listed on any ballot in California.
You’d think it goes without saying that voters need this information to make a decision about whether a candidate is fit for that high office. In fact, as we all know by now, all Presidential candidates up until the sitting one did release this information on their own, without being required to do so. (Trump’s release of two pages of his 2005 tax returns only after a TV news show said it would release this information was an insult to voters.)
Thanks, Sen. McGuire and the bill’s co-author, Sen. Scott Wiener, for introducing this legislation.
In our suggested scripts this week we work to keep Trumpcare from EVER passing the Senate, we begin to dig into Budget Appropriation committee intricacies, we request full funding for the Census Bureau, and we ask that Jared Kushner’s security clearance be revoked.
