Phone Scripts for 6.21.2017

Today’s scripts for Senators continue to focus on healthcare and the procedures that lead up to a vote in the Senate prior to July 4th. There are also scripts for those with Republican Senators who have not yet committed to their position. Indivisible encourages us to use our networks to find friends living in those states to make calls to their senators. Those numbers and scripts are at the bottom of this page.

Healthcare:

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

I am calling to thank the Senator for her public opposition to TrumpCare, and to urge her to take further steps to ensure that effective public hearings are held before the Senate votes, and that a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of the bill - on the nation, individual states, and our citizens is available for review well in advance of such a vote. So I have three questions.

Is the Senator willing to bring forward multiple amendments and insist that the entire senate vote on each one?

Is the Senator willing to withhold consent to any change to a rule that would rush this bill through congress?

Is the Senator willing to filibuster - really filibuster - to delay the vote until an effective public process compromise is reached?

These are the steps I am looking for the Senator to take.

Call Senator Harris(she serves on Intelligence Committee)

Russia Investigation:

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

With so much of the focus on TrumpCare, I want you to know that I have NOT forgotten the Russian debacle or that the Republican President both denies and affirms that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice. Thank you for your efforts on the Senate Intelligence Committee to find the truth in between the clear evasion by some witnesses.

I want to encourage you to work with your colleagues on the Intelligence Committee to chart a clear path to the entire story - both the Russian involvement in trying to skew the election results and in efforts to cover up that involvement and the close relationships some Republican candidates, campaign staff, and elected officials have developed with Russian leaders.

Call Senator Feinstein (she serves on Judiciary Committee)

Russia Investigation:

With so much of the focus on TrumpCare, I want you to know that I have NOT forgotten the Russian debacle or that the Republican President both denies and denies and affirms that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice.

Thank you for your efforts on the Senate Judiciary Committee to find the truth in between the clear evasion by some witnesses. I want to encourage you to work with your colleagues on the Committee to chart a clear path to the entire story - both the Russian involvement in trying to skew the election results and in efforts to cover up that involvement and the close relationships some Republican candidates, campaign staff, and elected officials have developed with Russian leaders.

Thank Your Rep. regarding Detention Centers:

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. Thank you, at your recent town hall, for agreeing to speak out for better conditions at ICE detention centers to ensure safety of detainees. I will be watching your public statements and social media messages closely to make sure those statements are made soon.

Background:
Both Rep. Thompson and Rep. Huffman both verbally committed "YES" t speaking out for better conditions at ICE detention centers to ensure safety of detainees. This is based upon one of OUR questions from several months back, which made its way onto a comment card today!

Thank Representative Thompson

Gun Violence

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I am calling to thank Representative Thompson for his leadership on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and for affirming both law-abiding gun owners' Second Amendment rights and our need to protect the public from those who wish to do harm through gun violence. We can strike a balance - but only if Congress steps up. Please ask the Representative to take a stronger and more visible position toward restricting private owners from access to assault-type weapons.

Thank Representative Huffman

National Monuments and Federal Land

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I am calling to thank Representative Huffman for his strong position on preserving our national monuments and opposing efforts to sell those federal lands for exploitation. I am also calling to urge him to bring forward bills that preserve federal lands as natural areas and national monuments that may not be sold or exploited.  Thank you.

Call Your Friends with Republican Senators!

Each day between now and the end of June, we encourage you to contact your friends in Red states to encourage them to make calls to their senators. We are particularly interested in these Senators, because they have indicated that they are undecided.

Lisa Murkowski (AK)

202-224-6665

Tom Cotton (AR)

202-224-2353

Jeff Flake (AZ)

202-224-4521

Cory Gardner (CO)

202-224-5972

Bill Cassidy (LA)

202-224-5824

Susan Collins (ME)

202-224-2523

Dean Heller (NV)

202-224-3353

Lindsey Graham (SC)

202-224-5972

Lamar Alexander (TN)

202-224-4944

Bob Corker (TN)

202-224-3344

Shelly Moore Capito (WV)

202-224-6472

We want your friends in these districts to call, text or Tweet Congress every day through end of June. Senate offices circulate call tallies every day.  Here is our suggested script:

Hello, my name is _____.  I'm calling about the Senate's version of TrumpCare.  Although no one has seen the details, I understand the plan is to bring the completed bill to the Senate floor before the end of June. How is Senator ___ leaning?

If Staff Says the Senator is Still Not Decided:

This is far too important an issue to rush through this way. The House version attempted the same rush, and has been universally panned because of the intended and unintended consequences for the American people. I am dismayed that this fast-track plan eliminates any opportunity for your constituents to evaluate the impact this bill would have on our health and our lives. I call for full and open hearings. I won't forget how Senator ____ votes when he/she is up for re-election.

If you (or your friends) can go one step further this week: Ask to talk to a Senate Health Care staffer or send him/her an email.

The more people - especially constituents - who call the Senate offices, the more the senators will understand how much health care matters.  And since many senators have mostly heard from people who wanted everything President Obama accomplished revoked, they need a serious outpouring of calls from the rest of us to understand that health insurance really matters, and makes the difference between poverty and success in our country.

Mike Fisher, working for Sen. Shelley Moore Capito - (202)224-6472 or mfisher@capito.senate.gov.

Matt Gallivan, working for Sen. Bill Cassidy - (202)224-5824 or mgallivan@cassidy.senate.gov.

Elizabeth Allen, working for Sen. Susan Collins - (202)224-2523 or eallen@collins.senate.gov.

Helen Heiden, working for Sen. Jeff Flake - (202)224-4521 or hheiden@flake.senate.gov.

Alison Toal, working for Sen. Cory Gardner - (202)224-5941 or atoal@gardner.senate.gov.

Chelsea Holt, working for Sen. Lisa Murkowski - (202)224-6665 or cholt@murkowski.senate.gov.

Sarah Schmidt, working for Sen. Rob Portman - 202) 224-3353 or sschmidt@portman.senate.gov.

Scott Riplinger, working for Sen. Dean Heller - (202)224-6244 or sriplinger@heller.senate.gov.

When you call your Senate office use their own words ask to speak to the relevant Health Legislative Assistant; explain that you are a constituent with grave concerns about how the bill will affect them. Then explain WHY. These staffers are human beings. They work on health care because they care about health every day, trying to help the people who keep their bosses in office. Tell your story.

You want these health staffers to be telling their bosses that they've spent all day on the phone, hearing from freaked-out and frightened constituents.
