SAVE OUR HEALTHCARE (OPTION A)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent living in _______.

I’m grateful that Senator [Feinstein or Harris] is opposed to the terrible healthcare bill that Republicans are trying to pass.

Could you please tell me the Senator’s position on stopping the healthcare bill via withholding consent and filibustering-by-amendment?

[wait for a response]

Thank you. This issue is very important to me. (If you have a personal story, feel free to share it.)

I hope the Senator will get in the arena on behalf of her constituents and play hardball. Would you please take down my contact information so that you can keep me posted on how the Senator is willing to fight against this bill?

Healthcare (OPTION B)

Hi, my name is ___________ and I live at (address, zip). I am a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

The vote in the Senate on TrumpCare has been delayed, and this gives the Republican leadership still more time to pressure reluctant, moderate Senators to vote YES.  This delay is also an opportunity to discuss compromise and care, and to consider the impact of this punitive bill on me, on my neighbors, on our communities and states - and on Health Insurance companies.

I’m calling to urge Senator [Harris or Feinstein] to spend this week supporting moderate Republicans in their desire to find compromise with Democrats. I urge her to talk with Republican and Democratic governors and encourage them to pressure their senators. And if compromise and goodwill cannot be built, I urge her to use every tool available under Senate rules to delay and defeat TrumpCare.

ELECTION INTERFERENCE

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip]. I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

In June of last year, Donald Trump, Junior, together with his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and the Republican President’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, met with a Russian lawyer expecting to learn something that would damage the Clinton campaign. Trump and Kushner did not immediately disclose that this meeting occurred, and when confronted, Mr. Trump did not immediately tell the truth about the reasons and expectations he had for the meeting. His emails are damning.

I am calling to ask Senator [Feinstein or Harris] to immediately request sworn testimony from Mr. Manafort, Mr. Kushner, and Mr. Trump on this and all other meetings. Please let her know that I support her in finding the truth and continuing her  media outreach regarding our elections, and Russian interference.

NET NEUTRALITY

Hi, my name is ___________ and I live at (address, zip). I am a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

The Republican President's attempts, along with Amit Pai of the FCC, to undermine an 'open internet' and Title II protections is a threat to the free exchange of information.  Approval of the proposed changes will seriously affect low-income Americans, small businesses, and any American who lives in a rural area. It may also create serious problems for public institutions (like libraries) and local non-profit organizations. I'm calling to ask Senator [Harris or Feinstein] to fight to preserve fair and equal access to the resources of the internet. What will the Senator do to fight back against the FCC's attack on net neutrality?

Background: Under the Obama administration, the FCC voted in favor of "net neutrality," to reclassify internet service providers (ISPs) as common carriers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act, treating them as public utilities, such as phone service, which meant they were subject to more governmental oversight. Title II also requires greater transparency with respect to fees and data caps, and to protect consumers by requiring these ISPs get consumer consent before using or sharing web browser histories. Title II has been used to prevent slowdowns of internet traffic over network interconnections fees (you might recall Netflix getting busted for this practice - consumers were protected because of Title II). The argument against net neutrality revolves around whether or not these ISPs should be allowed to charge more for certain services, whether or not the government should be overseeing the internet, and whether or not internet access should be treated as a utility. Ajit Pai's main concern appears to be halted or slowed investment in broadband networks apparently due to reduced income potential on the part of ISPs. Also, he says Americans' online privacy was at risk because Title II stripped the FTC of its authority over ISPs' security practices. These claims are dubious, at best. Assuming ISPs will choose to protect Americans over profiting from Americans is an absurd concept. Net neutrality must be enforced to protect Americans from being robbed of their unrestricted access to all corners of the internet, as it currently stands.

VOTING RIGHTS

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County. I am deeply concerned about preserving democratic elections, and find the ongoing accusations of ‘widespread voter fraud’ unconscionable, particularly as the Republican President has done nothing to address the known danger of Russian hacking. This, after the Republican Party was hacked, and data on millions of voters stolen.

California’s Secretary of State has joined with others to refuse to provide the information that the Republican President’s so-called ‘bipartisan’ Commission has demanded. But the clear solution is to strengthen US laws that protect both voter registration data and guarantee the security of the ballot.

Will the Senator speak out against this gross Administrative overreach and attempted violation of the personal privacy and voting rights of American citizens by the Commission? Will she work to insure that the Administration does not weaken the (NVRA) Motor-Voter law or in any way disenfranchise legitimate voters?

FREE PRESS

Hi, my name is ___________ and I live at (address, zip). I am a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.
I am deeply troubled that the White House has repeatedly prohibited news outlets from televising White House press briefings, and has increasingly communicated with reporters in restricted settings. President Trump’s White House staff has had 71 briefings in his tenure so far, compared to 114 under former President Barack Obama.  In February, administration officials came under fire for barring several outlets from attending a closed-door briefing.

“The Free Press Act,” sponsored by Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), comes in the wake of a series of White House actions that limit, dramatically, and in an historically unprecedented way, the media, and therefore, the American people’s access to, the thinking of the president.

Can I count on Representative (Huffman or Thompson) to co-sponsor “The Free Press Act?” Thank you!

LEGAL SERVICES

Hello, my name is _____ and I live at [Address, City, Zip].  I am also a member of Indivisible Sonoma County.

Every year, millions of our neighbors gain equal access to justice through civil legal assistance provided by the Legal Services Corporation.  But the Republican President wants to take this funding away. In the “ skinny budget” released in March, the Republican President proposed eliminating the Legal Services Corporation entirely. At the time, this produced bipartisan pleas for “robust funding” for the organization. Nonetheless, last week a House appropriations subcommittee passed a bill that would slash the organization ’s funding by roughly a quarter, from $385 million to $300 million.

The entire House will discuss the budget and all its parts. What is Representative [Huffman or Thompson] doing to preserve this service? How will he guarantee legal representation for us all?

Background:

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) promotes equal access to justice by funding high-quality civil legal assistance for low-income Americans. LSC is the largest single funder of civil legal aid in the country. LSC is a grant-making organization, distributing more than 93% of its federal appropriation to eligible nonprofits delivering civil legal aid. LSC awards grants through a competitive process and currently funds 134 independent legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the United States and its territories. LSC’s grantees serve thousands of low-income individuals, veterans, children, families, and seniors in every congressional district.
