Phone Scripts for 10.5.17 - Taxes/Disasters/Elections/Guns + More

This week, we focus on halting Republicans from loosening gun control regulations, passing a cruel budget resolution, and assaulting endangered species. We also call for impeachment, once again. Our first script is for Governor Brown to sign Mike McGuire’s SB149 bill.

Demand Governor Brown Sign SB 149 for Presidential Tax Transparency

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I’m calling to demand that the Governor sign into law SB 149, the Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act. The act would require the public release of the previous five years’ tax returns for any candidate entering the California Presidential Primary. In the past year we've found, sadly, that norms of decency can be ignored and trampled upon, endangering the pillars upon which we’ve built our democracy. When norms fail us, we must enact laws that require, not expect, fair play.

Will the Governor sign SB 149 into law today?

Rescue the People of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I’m calling to ask the [Senator/Representative] to demand an immediate and comprehensive rescue for the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. While the President brags and belittles those in distress, heros on the ground have been working to save lives and restore the islands.

Will the [MoC] make sure that Congress provides a disaster relief bill ready for Presidential signing before Congress leaves for their recess on October 16.?

Stop Online Election Tampering

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I’m calling to ask the [Senator/Representative] to write or co-sponsor legislation to create transparency in online advertising and to regulate the deliberate dissemination of false news. We now know that one of the ways Russia interfered with the 2016 election was by placing ads on Facebook and creating Twitter bots and fake accounts. Just this week we’ve seen alt-right trolls spread lies about a fake, Democrat Las Vegas shooter. Foreign advertising and interference in US elections is illegal, but due to the lack of regulation of online advertising and platforms’ vulnerability to spreading false news, Russia was apparently able to do this with ease. This must be stopped for the sake of electoral integrity.

Will the [MoC] write or co-sponsor legislation to create transparency in online advertising?

Oppose any budget resolution that cuts critical programs

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

Thank you for caring about Medicaid, Medicare, food assistance, and other critical programs that people like me rely on. Please oppose the upcoming budget resolution in Committee and use all procedural methods possible to ensure that any tax cuts must be offset by raising revenue in some other way, either by imposing new taxes on corporations or the wealthy, or by closing tax loopholes – and not by fantasizing that the cuts will generate magical growth.

I’m glad the [Senator/Congressman] is opposed to slashing key programs. Please take down my contact information so you can let me know how the[Senator/Congressman] votes in the end. I’ll be watching this vote closely.

Extend CHIP!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I’m calling to ask the [Senator/Representative] to push for an immediate extension to CHIP, based on the work of the Senate Finance Committee under Orrin Hatch and Ron Wyden. CHIP provides health insurance for 9 million American children and the program was allowed to expire on September 30th. Efforts to extend it were delayed due to the awful Graham-Cassidy bill. It’s past time to get this done and keep those 9 million children safe.

Will the [MoC] push for immediate action to extend CHIP?

Stop The Assault on Endangered Species

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I am deeply concerned about Congress' continued assault on endangered species and our public lands.  Right now, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works is holding hearings about three bills, S 605, S 1417 & S 1731, that would eliminate the requirement for consultations and science-based management of endangered species on our public lands.   S 605 eliminates management obligations for newly designatedendangered species, S 1417 limits environmental review for management activities on public lands that harbor endangered populations of mule deer or sage grouse, and S 1731 exempts many logging projects from environmental review altogether.  Republicans and even some Democrats may argue that these bills are necessary to allow forest management that helps protect from wildfires, but in reality this is a thinly veiled attempt to weaken environmental protection for our public lands and endangered species.  Please vote no on all three bills.  I want to be sure I can count on the Senator to be a strong advocate for proper science-based management of our public lands and the preservation of endangered species.

Will the Senator vote “no” on S605, S1417 & S1731?

Protect Women’s Reproductive rights and health, oppose the 20-week abortion ban

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

Republicans continue to provide false and dangerous information that is impacting millions of women. As an advocate of women’s health, I turn to the Senator to Protect women’s reproductive rights and health, and to oppose the 20-week abortion ban.

This bill, which passed the House on Tuesday, ispatently unconstitutional, since it would prohibit abortion before viability without any exception to preserve a woman’s health. President Obama wrote the following in 2015, and it applies today: “Over the past forty years, since Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has affirmed a woman's constitutional right to privacy, including the right to choose. H.R. 36 is a direct challenge to the Supreme Court's holdings on abortion.”

Thank you for standing strong for women.

Oppose NRA sponsored bills

I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

In the wake of the horrifying mass shooting in Las Vegas thoughts and prayers are not enough. We in the United States have more guns, more murder, more suicides and more mass murders than any other country -- by staggering amounts.

To break the cycle and protect more lives, meaningful action must be taken. This requires considering key policies, such as background checks and limiting access to weapons of war, and preventing more NRA-sponsored bills, like the SHARE Act, from making their way to the House floor.

The SHARE Act (HR 3668) seeks to lift restrictions on the purchase of silencers, while the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 38) would undermine existing state laws regarding who may carry loaded hidden guns in the community.

I call on the Congressman to vigorously oppose these dangerous bills by speaking out on the floor and to the press, I will be watching carefully.

Impeach the President

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible.

I’m calling to ask the Representative to support efforts to impeach the President. By virtue of his abuses of power, his failures of moral leadership and his abandonment of the basic duties of his office, Donald Trump has given ample reason to consider him guilty of high Crimes and Misdemeanors as set out in the Constitution. Such abuses endanger our country and the world, every minute of every day.

Will the Representative support efforts to impeach Donald Trump?
