Our representatives are home for the August recess. It’s up to us, this recess, to make them feel the urgency. Attend a town hall or reception and demand results. For impeachment hearings. For an assault weapon ban. Against the white supremacist scourge. Against Trump and Republicans everywhere.

The shootings are coming with lightning speed, one upon another. They are fueled by a president who laughs when his blind-rage crowds scream, “Shoot them!”, then responds, “That’s only in the Panhandle that you can get away with that stuff.” Wink, wink, nod, nod. Bang, bang.
The Mueller testimony this week was covered poorly by the press, who focused on show, not substance. But Mueller’s testimony provided even more reasons that the House should begin impeachment hearings.
Since then, more Representatives have called for the hearings to begin – there are now over a hundred, including new California Representatives Katie Porter, Harley Rouda and Mike Levin, all from flipped districts. As we head into the August recess, we need to increase the pressure on our own Mike Thompson to do his duty and support the beginning of impeachment hearings.
We must remind our representatives each week that there is critical resistance work we need them to do now. Please take a few minutes each day and call, using our scripts below.

The House finally began to hold more aggressive hearings this past week on the cruel detention of children and others in concentration camps. It was a long-needed step – and now we need to see more, much more and quicker action to hold the Trump administration accountable.
We need to remind our representatives each week that there is critical resistance work we need them to do now. Please take a few minutes each day and call, using our scripts below.
There are signs that the House is finally starting to offer a more robust opposition to Trump Administration attacks on our country – and vigorous opposition is the only thing that we’ve seen work. They need both our encouragement and our continued pressure to move forward. Please make a call each day to keep both the support and the pressure on! Hate the phone? The Resistance was formed and the Blue Wave driven by people all over the country who wanted to see Trump and the Republicans enabling him opposed. We fully expected, after flipping the House last fall, that opposition was, finally, what we would see. So far, we were largely wrong. Are you angry about it?
It’s past time for the House Democratic leadership to step up. Public support for impeachment is at 45% – higher than it was for Nixon at this stage. The children, women, and men being held in camps are suffering. Trump is on the verge of defying the Supreme Court. He’s being allowed to get away with it. Again.
It doesn’t have to be like this. The one thing that stops him is our effort. This week, let’s make our calls and demand that our representatives oppose him.
This past week the House capitulated on a bill to fund border control, giving unrestricted money to ICE and CBP that, we know from the experience of the last year, will be used to harm more children and families, not to improve conditions for them.
It was the Senate’s bill, which placed no restrictions on how the money would be used, that the House approved, abandoning their own, which at least included restrictions, among them the right to visit the camps to check on the conditions the children are being held under.
We’re furious with Senator Feinstein for voting “yea” on this blank check for abuse and with Representative Thompson for doing the same – his “Blue Dog Coalition” was one of two House groups that caused the collapse of negotiations.
We hope you will be incensed, too and will call this week to let them know. Fortunately, Congressman Jared Huffman opposed the bill. Senator Harris didn’t vote (we assume she was campaigning).
This week Katie Porter, a freshman Congresswoman from Orange County whom many of us worked to elect in 2018, came out in favor of beginning impeachment hearings. Jared Huffman has supported opening hearings since 2017, when the first impeachable offenses became obvious. Yet Mike Thompson still refuses to call for impeachment hearings to begin. He needs to hear from us every day until he finally steps up accepts his responsibility as a member of Congress to uphold our laws.
This week, too, came more shocking reports of abuses from the child refugee concentration camps the Trump regime is running. Yet Congress has held almost no hearings about this disgrace and the House is considering giving ICE and CBP even more money, in an effort to look tough on immigration. CBP and ICE are out of control and must not be given one penny more to continue their abuses.
Because of Democratic leadership’s decision to not go forward with impeachment hearings now, they are derelict in their duty to the American people and are actively undermining the rule of law through their neglect.
By playing politics and trying to run out the clock until they can be saved by the 2020 election, they’re endangering our nation. Fortunately for some Indivisible Sonoma County members, Rep. Jared Huffman understands this and has supported opening impeachment hearings since 2017. But others continue to offer weak arguments in defense of inaction. This is not what we fought so hard for.
Call our MoCs. They need to hear our voices – every day!
In a meeting this week with Representative Jared Huffman, we discussed the need to begin impeachment hearings, which he has supported for over a year because of the many impeachable offenses Trump had already committed in plain view. Jared had a recommendation: tell our other Members of Congress and the Speaker of the House that they should be more concerned about the dangers of not beginning impeachment hearings.
If you’re a Huffman constituent, please take time this week to thank him for his smart and principled stance. And if you’re a Thompson constituent, please call multiple times and let him know it’s time to begin impeachment hearings – or we risk ceding legitimacy to Trump’s claims of exoneration by giving him a pass.
