Phone Scripts 6.3-6.9.2019

We’re in a race against time. In the words of Sarah Kendzior, an expert on authoritarian systems, “Once an autocrat gets in, it is very hard to get them out. Every day is damage done. Opponents of autocracy need to use every tool they have. Officials need be fast and forceful before time runs out.” She concludes: “If they don't have impeachment hearings, they will end up with show trials.”

She’s right. Our elected officials need to be faster and more forceful – and it’s up to us to get them there. Please make calls several times this week in support of them taking rapid action in defense of our democracy. When our Representatives say things like, “The public isn’t there yet”, they’re talking about every time we don’t call. Let’s show them we’re there and we need them to step up.

Begin Impeachment Hearings NOW!

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to demand that the House of Representatives begin impeachment hearings now.

Speaker Pelosi is a wise and disciplined legislator. But we’re not in a legislative crisis. Trump has committed multiple impeachable offenses in plain sight and Mueller’s report lays out who must take action: Congress is the only body that can bring judicial proceedings against him. Impeachment hearings will allow Congress to make the case against Trump, fairly and in front of the public through televised hearings. That may well damage him further. Even if he isn’t removed from office, he will be tainted by the evidence of his wrongdoing. Critically, when laws aren’t enforced, the rule of law ceases to exist. Congress mustn’t duck its responsibility. There’s no time to waste – Congress must begin impeachment hearings now.

Hold the Stonewallers Accountable

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to demand that swift and forceful action, in the form of subpoenas, severe fines, and jail sentences, be used against any and all attempts to thwart requests issued by Congress.

Trump’s minions are rejected every single request from Congress outright and refusing completely to comply. If Congress is to remain a co-equal branch of the government, there must be consequences. And those consequences must come quickly and be painful enough to compel compliance. Congress has been too slow to anticipate obstruction and too timid in applying remedies. We need that to change, right now.

Block Arm Sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to demand that Congress block Trump’s illegal sale of arms to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Once again, Trump is declaring an “emergency” so that he can bypass Congress. This is what dictators to and Congress must stop him. The Arms Export Control Act provides the loophole that he is trying to exploit, but there is no emergency. Congress must thwart Trump’s authoritarian power grab by any means it can, and quickly. Please block Trump’s illegal arms sale.

Pass the Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6)

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the MoC] to co-sponsor and pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act and to reject any Republican motion to recommit.

We must all stand against family separations and the demonization of minorities. The Dream and Promise Act will provide permanent relief for Dreamers, TPS holders and DED holders. The Republicans will try to split the Democratic caucus with a “motion to recommit”. That must be rejected.

Defund Hate

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask Representative [Huffman/Thompson] to return funding for ICE and CBP to FY 16 levels and to prohibit them from raiding other accounts for funds.

ICE and CBP have a long track record of abuse and death, mismanagement of funds, and a culture of violence. My tax dollars should not be spent to detain, deport, or terrorize immigrant communities.

Vote “NO” on SB 386 to Protect California’s Clean Energy Future

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Senator to vote NO on Senate Bill 386 to protect California’s Clean Energy Future.

SB 386 would for the first time include large hydroelectric plants as part of the state’s renewable energy portfolio standard (“RPS”), thereby allowing utilities to reduce the need to add renewable, carbon-free energy sources to our power grid. We’re facing a climate crisis that threatens our state and our species. The state RPS is a critical part of our plan to move to 100% clean energy by 2045. It must not be weakened by SB 386. Please, Senator Dodd, vote NO.

Keep Families Together, YES on SB 136

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask the Senator to vote vote YES on SB 136 to reduce harsh and unnecessary prison sentencing.

SB 136 will advance racial justice and fairness and help keep families together. This bill repeals a mandatory one-year sentence enhancement that is added to an individual’s base sentence for each prior prison or felony jail term served. Research shows that sentence enhancements like the one addressed by SB 136 do not make our communities safer or deter crime. Instead, these enhancements tear families apart. It’s time California move forward toward real justice.

Eliminate Plastic Pollution and Waste

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent from zip code______ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [the Senator] to support Senate Bill 54, to illuminate plastic pollution and waste.

Single-use products—typically plastic packaging – are overflowing our landfills, fouling our oceans and streets, and burdening the environment. Current disposal and recycling policies cannot resolve these problems, and California can no longer afford to wait for a resolution.

Senate Bill 54 requires reduction, composting or recycling of 75 percent of single-use packaging by 2030. It’s a goal we can and must achieve in California. I’m asking the Senator to vote “YES” on SB 54.

Vote “YES” on AB 857 to support public banking.

Hi, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent from zip code _____ and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask Assembly Member to vote YES for Public Banking Bill AB 857.

After passing multiple committees and countering well-funded lobbyists trying to sink our bill, California now has the opportunity to create a real solution to Wall Street with public banks that will strengthen our local economies and meet the needs of our local communities. AB 857 is slated for a full-floor vote at the end of May. Please vote YES!
